IEA Global Hydrogen Review 2023 saw rapidly expanding low-carbon hydrogen projects being announced. Annual low-carbon hydrogen production could amount to 38Mt by 2030, if all realised. However, only 4% of these projects have reached FID. Cost, supply chain, financial costs, slow implementation of support schemes are hampering hydrogen deployment. Climate commitment calls for stimulation of stronger demand for lowcarbon hydrogen. Scaling up the production is also key to enabling the nascent hydrogen trade.

This panel session will review and learn insights from low-carbon hydrogen projects that reached FID. The panel of experts will also highlight the technologies advancements in scaling up production, cost reduction, partnership models, hub approach, and various innovations that could realise more low-carbon hydrogen projects in Asia.

The transport sector accounts for about 30% total emissions, and this hard-to-abate sector is yet to find proven, effective, well adopted decarbonisation solutions. The good news is that we see the strong impetus and commitment racing on, with multiple alternative fuels and technologies being trialed such as CNG, LNG, methanol, biofuels and hydrogen. Exxon recently successfully delivered sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) cargo to Singapore. Maersk added 6 more methanol-powered vessels, totalling 25 orders in June 2023. Pumped-storage hydropower is the most widely deployed storage technology today, whilst grid-scale batteries are catching up fast. Due to the intermittent factor that surrounds solar and wind energy, fast scaling of energy storage system is critical. Meeting rising flexible needs while decarbonising energy production is a fundamental challenge. A smart storage system needs to exploit its flexibility factor, including grid reinforcements, demand-side response, grid-scale batteries and pumped-storage hydropower. Besides lithium-ion batteries, flow batteries could emerge as a breakthrough technology. China’s recent commissioning of world’s largest Vanadium redox flow battery at 100 MW and a storage volume of 400 MWh was a case in point.
